February, 2009: Professional game analysts were seriously expecting beta within a few weeks. "Hang in there. We're in the final stretch." - Dustin Browder
June, 2009: "We're not even quarters away." - Chris Sigaty
Blizzard held a press event, and attendees who saw the game first-hand were confident that beta was only a few weeks away. The forum expected a beta date, but no date was given. Blizzard released battle report #3 to calm the rage.
August, 2009:
"Today we announced that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will not be ready for release by the end of 2009. Over the past couple of weeks, it has become clear that it will take longer than expected to prepare the new Battle.net for the launch of the game. The upgraded Battle.net is an integral part of the StarCraft II experience and will be an essential part of all of our games moving forward. This extra development time will be critical to help us realize our vision for the service.
Our mission is to develop games that deliver an epic entertainment experience. As part of that commitment, we will always take as much time as needed to ensure that our games and services meet the expectations of our players and the standard for quality that we set for ourselves as developers. As we work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination, we’ll also continue to polish and refine StarCraft II, and we look forward to delivering a real-time strategy gaming experience worthy of the series’ legacy in the first half of 2010."
February, 2010: Beta was finally released. Blizzard was still aiming for a “first half of the year” game release.
July 27, 2010: Game was released.
Unbelievable.|||Welcome to Blizzard game development for the past 10 years, please enjoy your stay.|||That is not trolling.|||

Anything and everything is trolling these days.|||

Indeed it is rather overused.|||Who would of thought that plans don't always work out the way they are expected to.|||It was pretty widely speculated that the delay in releasing SC2 beta was due to the fact that b.net 2.0 wasn't ready yet. Since the game was obviously done and ready to be beta tested long before the beta was released, and since even when the beta did come out b.net 2.0 was a pile of crap, this seems like the most likely reason. Guess what the major purpose of the D3 beta is? Stress test the b.net servers.
You're grasping at straws.|||

Na, they've already confirmed that it will be to test the game's compatibility over a wide range of hardware.
They've been doing internal beta testing for a long time, and we can safely assume that it's pretty much bug free by now. What they can't internally test for are the problems that will inevitably arise as the game is played on tens of thousands of different hardware/software configurations.
Since Battle.net 2.0 is already in place with SC2 and working as intended, it's also safe to assume that they've already artificially stress tested the infrastructure to make sure it can handle the massive load of players that are going to be hammering it on launch day.|||

How does it feel knowing that the game was delayed 1 year because they were working on bnet 2.0 and bnet 2.0 still turned out to be crap?
Personally I'm not expecting beta this year. This whole "we're a few weeks away" happened in SC2 too.|||But the D3 beta is in a completely different situation. It doesn't have to wait on b.net2 like SC2 did. And the D3 beta is only testing a small part of the game, not all the units for 3 races.|||Because every time a dev gives an estimation on a release date, it's always true.
How long have you been playing games? Seriously...|||

And yet, I still enjoy B.Net 2.0 more than the original b.net...
Is it the best out there for community or versatility? Hell no. But it is still better than the original b.net.

They had 11 years to improve it.

No, it was deliberate misinformation.|||

D3 isn't the only game where Blizzard trolls the fans.

Have you ever heard the development time for Duke Nukem: Forever, released earlier this year?|||
That's different. Sc2 had an adept following; DNF did too, but when they heard the game was shifting around and would be put on indefinite hiatus for years, people obviously didn't still flood the forums every day.

I think there was a hint of investor pressure for releasing the "SC2 in 2009" statement. Also a little incompetence in game balance. I think it eventually clicked that if Blizzard released a big MLG E-sport RTS too early it would be a massive upset.
I don't think the same will happen in the ARPG-land of Diablo III.|||blizzard really needs to start releasing beta and full version games before there done. sick of this waiting crap, i dont want quality i want quantity. we should be at diablo 35 by now honestly...|||

What about this: They had unforeseen problems with Bnet 2.0?
I know, it's what they're saying and they gotta be lying, right? Also when Blizzard employees are asked about the pressure from investors/Activision
And dear god, they needed like 5 months of beta to tune stuff just so it would be a successful e-sports game right out of the box and then they _still_ had to deliver 1-2 patches afterwards to get balance just right. I mean come on, that has incompetence written all over it.
And you guys wonder why they don't like naming any dates.
