Items brake — mats appear!

I don't quite remember under which circumstances items broke into nothingness in D2, but they could become a portion of materials in D3 automatically. As if we salvaged them, but they just salvage themselves when say you're dead (or the item got hit) and the durability was less than 10%.|||

"NOOOOOO, my beloved Uber Doomslayer Twinblade of Major Epicness turned into 2x lvl 1 scrap metal materials" - thought I just repaired it.... /quit&nevercomeback!
Seriously though, I don't think this is the game for such a feature. We love our precious and we want's to keeps it (loot that is).
-=T-BoNe=-|||Er, no. I remember that happened only with normal rarity items. Maybe some magic, but I have doubts. Normals broke for good tho.|||

I don't remember this happening with any normal rarity items except throwing weapons that suddenly completely dissapeared from your weapon slot when using the last one in the stack.
Else I have only seen Ethereal items getting broken for good.
Is it just me not using normal rarity items long enough to experience it being broken for good or is it totally wrong? We are talking about D2 right? ^^
-=T-BoNe=-|||Correction. Items brake - gold disappear!|||Seriously, guys? Items "break."
I support broken items being unusable until they are repaired, and perhaps even a broken item may cost 5-10% more to repair (per durability) than an unbroken item.|||
