- You get a level 5 gem every 15 minutes (or 4 every hour)
- Gems still have a 3:1 transformation system
- You play on average 4 hours a day
Please watch the video first: http://www.youtub
Is there something wrong with my math?|||maybe, maybe not...
But I highgly doubt it's correct because blizzard have probably balanced the rune drops so it doesn't take that long.
Theorycrafting isn't really valid without the exact correct numbers.|||
Q u o t e:
According to my math, it will take 3.37 years to get one level 14 gem under some basic conditions:
- You get a level 5 gem every 15 minutes (or 4 every hour)
- Gems still have a 3:1 transformation system
- You play on average 4 hours a day

It's now 2:1 for higher gems so it changes everything....
And this is only if you only get level 5 gems and nothing else lol|||Those are some nice facts you presented.|||
Q u o t e:
Your error is to assume all of the gems are of the smallest size
No, I'm assuming ever gem you find is a level 5 gem, 3^9.|||You forgot to calculate the chances that you'll get the right type of gem as well. So, without trading multiply that by 6. That's right, 20.2222 years. Though in that time, statistically speaking, you should have one of each type.|||

It would take you 3 times longer if you got a level 4 gem, and 3 times longer than that if you got a level 3 gem. This is assuming you get nothing but level 5 gems.
Listen to the entire thing before posting.|||

I take that into account, and assume you get 4 of a certain type of gem every hour. It's a VERY liberal amount.|||

That hasn't been confirmed yet.

If you get any of the level 1-4 gems, it will actually slow you down even more, by an exponential factor. The assumption I'm making is EXTREMELY liberal with the drop rate.|||and this is why diablo is a game about trading..and why solo players are idiots when they demand to be on equal footing for traders.|||

Again, as I said in the video, EVERYBODY wants a 14 gem for EACH of their items that has a socket. So people won't be trading away something they need.|||I don't get people worrying about gem levels. What's wrong with them being super rare? I HOPE blizzard will make things super rare so it will be really interesting to play for a long long time.|||

then do the math for how many gems will be dropping each hour for estimated 400,000 players playing at any 1 time, for each level of gem.
Then figure out then, how many lvl 14 gems drop each hour with 400,000 players playing, and how many potential lvl14 gems drop.
I bet you its in the 1000s, or close to it. 1000+ level 14 gems and hour? suddenly it doesnt seem that rare.|||

it won't take 3.37 years though.
or well maybe if he hit the numbers spot on.
Point is, this is still just theory... you can make one so everyone have 14 lvl gems after a day with other numbers.
So there is no actuall point with this.|||Keep in mind, you may find 4 level 5 gems an hour. That doesn't account for levels lower than 5. you may find 20 level 1's, 14 level 2's, 10 level 3's, and so on and so forth.
Trading certainly will come into play
My assumption is, most will get comfortable with a level gem that isn't "Perfect" say a level 9 or 10, because beyond that its simply more economical to sell 3 level 10's to 1 level 11. However there will be those that seek perfection.
Also has anyone done the math on how long it would take to craft a "Zod" rune in Diablo 2? I'd like to see those results. but again, I'm assuming non one has done it simply because "Ber" rune which is below Zod has a value not far from Zod.|||
Q u o t e:
According to my math
math is not everything, try to imagine why|||
Please elaborate.|||

Assuming:
-You did nothing but Countess runs
-The Countess drops an Ist (or the equivalent in Mals and Ums) every 3 hours
-You automatically have the necessary gems to upgrade your runes
-You played for four hours a day
-You never traded
1.05 years
These numbers are approximations from pre v1.13|||

And ofcourse every other player will just give you the gems they find....
Imo, most players will hold on to their gems to make it a certain level that they feel is enough. and then sell the rest they get. But that point will still take time for each player to reach, and it is quite stupid if that is really the case.
Why? because getting a level 14 gem sould not take longer than a few months TOPS imo to get.(by hunting monsters solo, trading is another deal and it might make it simpler, but again, you still need the items with the right value to get anything traded, so you still need to kill stuff to trade)
