There has still been no clarification almost a year later on whether or not the male Barb is still the same one from D2 or if it is a new character.

Hopefully it is still the same... what with each class/gender combo getting a different pre-rendered cinematic introduction on game startup (i.e. possibly different backstories).|||Blizzard said it is the same barbarian. D3 takes place 20 years after D2, that's why he has gray hair, he's 20 years older.

Blue post would be great.|||

Bashiok has since said the devs were re-evaluating that decision and did not know with which option to proceed... and then silence until now.|||I will openly weep if it's not the same barb.|||My fault. http://forums.battle
I recall it being absolutely confirmed that now the Barbarian is a different one, not the one from D2.|||You know what I reckon? People will just say he's the same barb anyway. If they introduce the barb from D2 in D3 separately that may be a problem... I don't think I'd be easily swayed though.|||I think a lot of the story/plot of this game is going to involve a lot of fact finding/sleuthing about what went on in the first two games. Since the old barb was actually there and punched Meph/Diablo/Baal right in the face, there's not as much mystery involved. You can't rediscover things from a different perspective if the same guy is running around.|||

That's true, but the inverse is also true. Wit ha new character you can't see the things in the angle the one who was there would see them.|||From what reports I've heard about the Barbarian's introduction cinematic, it doesn't seem that he will be the individual from D2, but at the same time nothing dismisses the other way around. Official word for this will be more than appreciated!|||This is the thing that would be just fine without any official explanation, much like the elusive chat gem.|||As long as the new barb is better at duel wielding it doesnt really matter to me. :D|||

The chat gem has so much tradition around it... and I don't think I can bear another 'enigma'.
By the way, not explaining the origin of the barbarian, doesn't sound like much fun. Not that we won't figure it out, once we actually get to play the game, but some people's anticipation will be greatly easied if we get some info on the subject.|||I bet the game will tell us more about that matter.|||I don't understand why people are so concerned over this, complaining about how disappointed they'll be if it turns out they aren't the same; especially since you can create a female barb.
If it's supposed to be the same guy, how are they going to account for the female version? Are they going to create a separate story line where after defeating Baal he realized he was living a lie, so he went down to Sanctuary's local plastic surgeon to get hormone treatment, breast implants and vaginoplasty, then lived out the next 20 years as a woman?

I believe we can make slightly better guesses than that...|||The barbarians very obviously discovered cloning technology.
And twisted the science to create an army of mutants with boobs and %*%@@%s.|||

Wow ...what?! This isn't mass effect, the different genders aren't meant to be the same person.
